Social Media Sites That DoFollow

follow Social Media Sites That DoFollowFirst, a lesson on what dofollow and nofollow means. For the most part, the internet is built out of code, lots and lots of it. Code, like HTML, javascript, CSS, is the stuff that creates websites, blogs, landing pages and just about everything else on the web. Dofollow and nofollow are two HTML attributes, or codes, that tell the search engines whether or not they should follow links that point away from the originating site.

For example, all WordPress blogs by default are set to nofollow. This is helpful to the blogger because it preserves the blogger’s page rank by eliminating link dilution. In layman’s terms, it keeps the search engine’s focus only on the blog. Another nofollow perk is that it fends off rogue spammers who troll the internet seeking out opportunities to linkbuild back to their sites and products. Without dofollow links enabled, it’s pointless to try and promote themselves.

On the other hand, web technology, especially social media, is based on interactions. User created content, relationships and community are what encourage conversations and build connections. Think of dofollow as a form of reciprocity. If people are willing to comment on you blog or use your social media platform, reward them back by following their weblinks. And as far as spammers go, there are some wonderful add-ons, plugins and software available that can keep out the bad apples without spoiling things for the rest.

Beyond personal blogs and individual sites there are many well-known social media platforms that practice the nofollow rule. Digg and StumbleUpon are  two of those sites. Digging and stumbling your own blog posts won’t help you build traffic and recognition back to your site. The good news is that there are plenty of social media sites that are dofollow promoters. Knowing who they are and supporting them is a win-win situation for both groups involved. They get more members and you get live link recognition. Not a shabby deal.

Here’s a list of social media sites that are dofollow friendly. One last mention, some of the sites below permit one active dofollow link in a member’s profile only. They are indicated with a red underline and asterisk.
